5 pesos= 0.33 euros = 0.49 cdn = 0.46 us
I want to apologise to the taxi man, but it's too late...
This is what happened. I got a taxi on the street outside the Nikko. The taxi driver and I agreed on a price. I usually insist on using the metre, but his was broken, I was in a rush, it was getting late, and it's not easy to find a normal priced taxi by the Nikko hotel. When I arrived at my destination, I handed him a 100 peso bill. He didn't have the exact change, he was 5 pesos short. (Second time this happened to me today, where the taxi man didn't have any change!) I was almost ready to accept, but then something in me changed...(change...change change change...there are lots of 'changes' here!) I don't know why I changed my mind! Rather than let it be and let him have the extra 5 pesos, which I usually give as a propina (tip) anyways, I insisted on getting out of the taxi and finding change in the street.
Why did I react like this? I don't know. Well, perhaps it has to do with sticking up for myself...especially after the other day, when a French woman I know was shocked to hear that I hail taxis in the street rather than ask for one at an official taxi stand. She says that the taxis at the stands are trustworthy, and that although they cost a little more, you are guaranteed to be hassle free. Street taxis are not...in her experience. I was surprised to hear this because since I have arrived in Mexico, all I have done is hail taxis...and I have had no problems, touch wood!
In the end I found change from a kiosk, and I gave him the exact amount. The man shook his head, "all that for only 5 pesos!"
I have learned two lessons from this situation:
a) In Mexico, always carry small change for taxi rides because more often than less, taxi drivers don't have it, and rarely do the stores nearby.
b) 5 pesos is not worth all the energy I have dispensed thinking about this situation...so next time, just give in and let the 5 pesos go!

This is hilarious! (though you may not have thought so at the time). Sometimes we make mountains out of molehills, don't we?
When we were in Jakarta, we were told everywhere that taxi drivers don't even bother searching their pockets for change, they just take it for granted that it's their tip!
So, yes, always carry small change ;D.
Thanks....I feel better about it now....but I promise myself I won't make a big deal out of 5 pesos anymore!
