Last weekend we went to Taxco with our friends Faiza and Emmanuel. We left early at 7 Saturday morning. We drove there in 3 hours. We parked at a small plaza. The roads are all made of stones, they are narrow and steep-hilled. It’s a picturesque colonial city. It’s renowned for it’s silver jewelery as in the past it was an important silver mine area. Now the mines are pretty much empty, so they have to rely on imported silver material. The tradition still carries on, locals make the jewelery during the week and on the weekends they sell them in the markets which are scattered all over the centre, hidden around bens, beyond opened wooden doors. Folks from Mexico City come here to buy jewelery and then take it back to the capital to sell in the markets at twice the price!
Bumped into a man from Peterborough, Ontario area. It was pure coincidence. As I walked by his stall he spoke English drawing my attention to his jewelry pieces. I turned to get a look at this man…who was wearing a Canadian t-shirt and above his head was a Kawartha newspaper clipping pinned to his stand wall, an article accompanied by a photo about his jewelry business. He looked as thought he’d just gotten out of a row boat, finished taking off a fish from his fishing line! He explained to me that he used to go back and forth every year, at least 3 times a year, exporting to and selling jewelery in Canada at shows and festivals. When he lost his mother, who he’d cared for for about 25 years, he decided to move down here for good!
Had one of the best guacamole dishes on a rooftop restaurant with some topotos (tortilla chips), washed down with some delicious freshly squeezed orange juice with a sideview of the cathedral.

Ooohhh, I'd die for the 'original' tortilla chips and guacamole! Does it taste any different than in France? Did you get any silver jewellery from Taxco? Is there a specific type of jewellery that Mexico is well-known for? You know, like how Turkey is known for its blue evil eye pendants?
It's funny, because I have eaten tons of guacamole before coming here...either our own or friends' versions of it. Here they tend to sometimes add a few spicy surprises...like hot peppers. We purposely asked them to exclude them in this one. So...at times it's spicy, and other times very bland. This one was just right....a little salty and lots of tomatoes.
The tortillas were way more authentic than the ones we get in other countries. They are very simple in taste, not salty at all...and very crunchy!
As for the jewellery, yes, I bought a turquoise ring and a necklace...beautiful. I'll add a photo!
In terms of specific types of jewellery, the Mexicans have various designs according to their group, Aztec, Mayan...
