Bingo after orphanage talk
Yesterday, Faiza and I met with a woman, Yvonne, who is a relative of Linda's. She works with orphanages and helps women take control of their lives in the poor areas surrounding Mexico City. She agreed to meet us after we called for help. We told her everything about the orphanage. She was so kind, listened with opened ears and an open heart. At this point in the game, she gave us important suggestions as to where to start. If we can't accomplish this first phase, then she highly recommended us to move onto something more accessible and much easier. Seeing as we have been greatly affected by the kids's situation at the orphanage, we are going to do our best in improving their situation.
1. Need a full time person to work on this project...eventually.
2. Find a lawyer who can do research on all the problems at the orphanage
3. Speak with the nun at the home and find out if she is willing to work cooperatively
4. Speak with the older children (17-19 years old) to see if they would like to live in a home with kids their own age.
5. What will happen to the nun afterwards, which religious order does she belong to.
After speaking with Yvonne, I was called up by a my friend Sally, from Spanish class, to join her and the wife of the Lebanese Embassador, Raja, to play bingo at Antara (fancy shopping centre in Polanco).
Picture this:
Walk into a room full of slot machines, and through another set of doors is a room full of round tables. Folks with marker in hand, quickly scratching out numbers on their bingo cards as they are being called out over the speakers. Scooted across the room and reached their table. I barely had time to say hello when a woman passing by threw us a card each. Numbers started being called at 100 km per hour. In a matter of 3 minutes, I filled my entire card and yelled BINGO. I won!!! Well, actually I tied with another person. We shared the prize of 170 pesos. Pretty good for a first try. We played on and on for an hour. Sally won 4 times in total, I won 3 times and Naja none unfortunately...
