O Canada!

July 1st, 2007 - Canada Day

Second week in Mexico D.F. Gotta fill you in on someting that happened last Friday. Went out to eat lunch by the Sheraton Hotel. Found a locals’ lunch place, the nice natural lighting drew me in to have a seat and have a bite to eat. But when I asked to have lunch she sent me to the back which is the sit down restaurant...with my limited Spanish skills, couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t eat at the front area. Told the waitress I was vegetarian, eat no meat nor fish. She brought me some bread, fresh guava juice (love that stuff to bits, haven’t had it since my Taiwan days), and vegetable soup with green leaves inside. Next dish was rice with something like tomato sauce. All in all it was pretty good. But the best part of lunch was when 3 musicians walked into the back, one on crutches, and all with guitars slung around their necks. They immediately started playing and singing beautiful harmonised Mexican songs. They were there in honour of a man’s birthday, I was told. Their musical sound was so warm, sweet and made my skin tingle with goosebumps. There was something about this live music, their moving voices, so rich with emotion...call me over-sensitive...I don’t care! It made my day.

We moved to a new hotel Saturday. The room is much bigger and the bed lager than king. The maid knocked on our door around 6 asking if it was alright to come in and prepare the bed. What on earth is this service? It’s the Nikko hotel, Japanese hospitatliy. Yes ‘mam. They turn down the covers and sheets in a nice tight corner to facilate getting into bed. To top it off they set up a glass and water bottle on the bed side table, a towel at the feet with fresh white slippers. We are treated like royalty here, I won’t want to leave! On the other hand...it was kind of awkward being in the room as she was fussing about, it feels wrong to be waited on and pampered. Ain’t used to it, probably won’t ever.

The other day I asked Isabel why Mexicans have large vehicles, despite all the pollution they give off. Her answer was simple. Because the streets in Mexico City are all cracked and there are many speed bumps. Therefore a large vehicle makes the ride much more comfortable.
