El Grito Long Weekend

We flew to Ciudad del Carmen...which, by the way, is not worth staying unless there is the Grito happening. The city has very little to offer tourists, no offense to Ciudad del Carmenians! We immediately drove north along the coast of the Golf of Mexico to Campeche (about 2 hours). Campeche is BEAUTIFUL. Apparentely it's the cleanest and safest city in all of Mexico. It's a fortified colonial town. In many ways it's similar to San Cristobal in Chiapas or San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato, but without all the tourists. Campeche is quiet. There is lots to visit in the area...such as the pyramids at Edzna, further south you have Calakmul, Chicanna and Becan...all worth visiting if you like pyramids.
CAMPECHE
EDZNA PYRAMID
BECAN
The Mayan Tree of Life!
CHICANNA
Our humble abode where we stayed the night before visitin Calakmul. An ecological resort...CAMPING and no running water!!
CALAKMUL
SABANCUY
On the way from SABANCUY to CIUDAD DEL CARMEN
And finally, we finished our trip by celebrating EL GRITO with all the locals of Ciudad del Carmen.
