Paricutin is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. It's the youngest volcano, erupting in the 50s. No one died as it was a very slow volcano, so the village at the base had enough time to pack up and move elsewhere. The only building left standing is the church, and only the top of it and a chapel (which the locals claim was miraculously saved)!
We rented horses for the hike to the volcano. It took around 2 hours from the cabanas to the volcano's base, a 30-45 minute climb up the volcano plus 30 mins to walk on the rim of the crater and 5mins down a sandy volcanic steep slope. by the way, as we sat to rest once at the top, our bums got hot all of a sudden. The volcano is still cooling off! We could barely sit for long! You could even see the steam!!
In total, it was a 7 hour-day, including the visit to the church.
Well-worth going there...once of our favorite places we have visited in all of Mexico!
